Thousands of Ministering Christians

After our first two years in ministry in Boston, we wrote a paper in 1966 called, “A Total Approach to Inner City Ministry.” By “total approach” we didn’t mean that we had all the answers, but that the city was such a complex and challenging environment that only a total

Inhaling the Life of the City

A few weeks ago, armed with lightweight beach chairs and snacks, Doug and I walked over to the Boston Common and joined the crowd gathering to enjoy this year’s production of Shakespeare on the Common. On another recent daily walk we found ourselves on a park bench in the Public Garden, watching the ducks and the swan boats, the street musicians and all the different people passing by.

Seeing God’s Love at Work in the “Broken-Glass Alleys”

Doug and I were at a prayer meeting a few nights ago, focusing on the upcoming outdoor service to be held by our church at the local plaza in our neighborhood. As we prayed, I thought about how the Emmanuel Gospel Center, where we lived in an apartment above the chapel, had been located right where the plaza is now. The whole neighborhood was demolished and rebuilt in the 70s, but I still remember the original streets and buildings that existed in 1964.

Why is Boston’s Quiet Revival Ignored?

The invisibility of Boston’s Quiet Revival is a phenomenon that never fails to intrigue and mystify me.

Mediocrity

MEDIOCRITY! That’s my motto! I always get nervous when people start talking about “excellence.” I mean, I’ve been a “B” student all my life. “A’s” scare me! Being on time scares me! I have a fear of getting places early.

Urban Planning Series: An Ideal Environment for the Gospel

We’ve been talking about the legacy of urban planner Jane Jacobs, who described city people as those with “eyes on the street” who “know each other and yet welcome strangers all the time.” To me, this sounds like the folks in a local urban church, people who know and watch out for each other, and yet welcome new folk all the time – an ideal environment for the Gospel!

Urban Planning Series: Learning to Appreciate the City

It is important for students of urban ministry to know Jane Jacobs’ work because she is an advocate for the city. She helps us have a positive attitude towards the city, our neighborhood and its streets, which is essential if we are involved in urban ministry.

Jacobs writes about having a positive attitude toward a city neighborhood using the example of Boston’s North End, which she says was originally built “to house the flood of immigrants first from Ireland, then from Eastern Europe and finally from Sicily.”
