Process of the Gospel: "Lord, give us eyes to see!"

“Lord, give us eyes to see!” How many times have we prayed for that? In last week’s blog, I said we would be talking about engaging in the steps of the Process of the Gospel. As we do this, I want to especially focus on the need to follow Christ’s example of humility, and even find ways of self-limitation in how we approach each step.

Process of the Gospel: “We did it ourselves”

Today we are beginning a new blog series on the “Process of the Gospel.”

Keep the light bulb on!

When we begin to really understand how living systems work, it’s like “light bulbs” are coming on in our heads. It makes sense! We can see that the living systems God created are truly like cats, not toasters. Last week, I talked about this “light bulb experience” – when we really begin to think out of our subconscious thought. But the light doesn’t stay on for long! Why is that?

"How do I do Living system Ministry, anyway?"

Isn’t that your bottom line question? What's the first step in doing Living System Ministry? Doug’s response is that you begin in the subconscious, but for me, that’s not very helpful. My subconscious is messy; it’s the place I put the stuff I don’t want to think about, where my bad feelings and memories – my negative internal running commentary – is suppressed, eventually rendering me closer to “un”-conscious or comatose! Doug and I actually had a big fight about it.

Doing Spiritual Yardwork: Take the good and leave the bad!

I’ve been using the grafting analogy to understand how to do Living System Ministry in our churches. So if you’re in a large western city, what does this look like in relating to newcomers from developing countries?

Doing Spiritual Yardwork: "How could those flowers come from that plant?"

In last week’s blog, I introduced the idea of grafting new “branches” into the nourishing “root” of our local Christian settings. My friend, Charlotte, is quite familiar with grafting and wrote this a while back, challenging Christianity in another way:

There is no shortage of living system analogies in the Bible. How many times did Jesus talk about vines and vineyards? Here’s another one!

Our mission at EGC is to “understand and nurture urban churches and communities.” I never realized that “nurturing” was also an act of growing a garden!
