The place where it all began: A safe environment for healing

My daughter, Rebecca, is a folk singer. The title for this blog came from one of her songs: “Every day I’m waiting for a sign to take me to the place where it all began…”

What's Your Understanding of Order?

How we understand order is critical to everything -- from how our church operates to how our ecology operates. I believe we have two different understandings of what “order” is all about, which can be encapsulated in the following two questions:

The Importance of Redemption in a Technological Culture

We can do simplistic things that are infectious to the living system order of creation. What happens when we find ourselves creating an infection? Well, since every living system has some form of immune system to preserve its life in a fallen world, we can expect our infectious activity to be attacked!

Cause-and-Effect: Do we really have control?

I’d like to pick up where I left off last week, talking about cat mode vs. toaster mode, and the questions, “How do I do the job?” vs. "How does the job get done?"

Cat Mode vs. Toaster Mode

I tend to define things by looking at their opposite. So here I want to begin to define how cat thinking and actions work by looking at their opposite—toaster thinking and action. Yes, we laugh at treating a cat like a toaster, and using “toaster tools” on a cat, but this is what many of us are doing in ministry. And we don’t even know when we’re doing it!

Implanting Organization

Last week, I wrote about the limitations of organization and the danger of having it become the focus in our ministries. I’d like to discuss this further here, this time looking at how we can use organization and technology appropriately to benefit a living system.

Crossing Beyond the Organization Threshold

In our modern culture we are greatly enabled by our organizational skills, but at the same time, are also greatly limited by them. I don’t think I need to say much about the benefit of organization and programs to accomplish multitudes of tasks in our society. Our problem is rather that we know very little about the limitations of organization.
