Seeing God’s Love at Work in the “Broken-Glass Alleys”

Doug and I were at a prayer meeting a few nights ago, focusing on the upcoming outdoor service to be held by our church at the local plaza in our neighborhood. As we prayed, I thought about how the Emmanuel Gospel Center, where we lived in an apartment above the chapel, had been located right where the plaza is now. The whole neighborhood was demolished and rebuilt in the 70s, but I still remember the original streets and buildings that existed in 1964.

Why is Boston’s Quiet Revival Ignored?

The invisibility of Boston’s Quiet Revival is a phenomenon that never fails to intrigue and mystify me.

Mediocrity

MEDIOCRITY! That’s my motto! I always get nervous when people start talking about “excellence.” I mean, I’ve been a “B” student all my life. “A’s” scare me! Being on time scares me! I have a fear of getting places early.

Three Thought Patterns for Christian Leaders

In 1 Timothy 3, the Bible describes qualifications of Christian leaders. This is one of perhaps 20 texts that I have thought about constantly through 45 years of ministry, and in reading it, tried to understand how the writer thought. It has been my experience that if I can understand how a Biblical writer thought, and change my own thinking process to his, then I can much more easily apply the text in my daily life.

Nurture Spiritual Vitality Wherever You Find It

When we first came to Boston in the 60’s, we had a hard time finding spiritual vitality. All around us were decaying, historic church buildings in which mere handfuls of discouraged believers met. There was little spiritual vitality. Paying the heating bill was often the most pressing issue the deacons faced. It seemed that too many churches were simply trying desperately to survive, and had long since lost a vision for either evangelism or social responsibility.

Poverty: Coming soon to a location near you! (or it might be there already!)
Last week, I discussed five common myths around homelessness. Today, I’d like to discuss another assumption that is widely believed – the picture of homelessness, what poverty looks like today. Homelessness is a systemic issue and it is spreading through our culture. It is no longer confined to urban settings nor is it limited to the streets. One may think it is not an issue in their city or town, but it may be time to take a closer look.
