How Boston's Quiet Revival Changed the World, and Our Challenge Today

In the video below, hear Doug Hall explain Boston’s Quiet Revival – how God worked through unknown people in hidden, forgotten neighborhoods to significantly change the face of this secular city.  In over four decades, the number of churches in Boston – many of which were planted in the city's worst slums – has nearly doubled (from approximately 300 in 1970 to 575 in 2010) and the estimated percentage of the city’s population in churches has increased from about 3% to about 14%.

Doing Spiritual Yardwork: Take the good and leave the bad!

I’ve been using the grafting analogy to understand how to do Living System Ministry in our churches. So if you’re in a large western city, what does this look like in relating to newcomers from developing countries?

Doing Spiritual Yardwork: "How could those flowers come from that plant?"

In last week’s blog, I introduced the idea of grafting new “branches” into the nourishing “root” of our local Christian settings. My friend, Charlotte, is quite familiar with grafting and wrote this a while back, challenging Christianity in another way:

There is no shortage of living system analogies in the Bible. How many times did Jesus talk about vines and vineyards? Here’s another one!

Our mission at EGC is to “understand and nurture urban churches and communities.” I never realized that “nurturing” was also an act of growing a garden!

The place where it all began: A safe environment for learning

Just as it began for us in the ’60s, ministry has continued to be a safe place for learning. Every year we teach urban ministry to about 45 students. An important part of the curriculum is for students to personally share their spiritual pilgrimages, and we’ve seen many of them bring up difficult issues. This is because they sense that the class is a safe environment for honest inquiry and learning.

My daughter, Rebecca, is a folk singer. The title for this blog came from one of her songs: “Every day I’m waiting for a sign to take me to the place where it all began…”

“Doug, what are we supposed to prioritize?”

I was picking a fight with my husband: “Doug,” I said, “you say that in ministry, we should prioritize the ‘large system,’ but in I Timothy 3 we are encouraged to choose leaders whose lives are sound at the core of their personal and family life. In Acts 1:8, we see that sharing the Gospel is to begin in our home town and then spread out to the region.”
