Why is Boston’s Quiet Revival Ignored?

The invisibility of Boston’s Quiet Revival is a phenomenon that never fails to intrigue and mystify me.

"Watch out! That thing is alive!"

Sometimes, to escape the commercials on CNN, Doug and I watch the History Channel. Have you seen the show about the Louisiana bayou boatmen who go out looking for alligators? They will pull up near the shore next to what looks like two bumps of wood in the water. As they get close, the “bumps” dissolve as the gator rises up and thrashes around in the water. “Watch out – that thing’s alive!” they yell before they shoot the reptile and haul its massive body into their boat.

Crossing Beyond the Organization Threshold

In our modern culture we are greatly enabled by our organizational skills, but at the same time, are also greatly limited by them. I don’t think I need to say much about the benefit of organization and programs to accomplish multitudes of tasks in our society. Our problem is rather that we know very little about the limitations of organization.

Normal State of Being

The term “living system” is normally applied to define life in some form of organism: A cat, a horse, a human body. But in our discussions, the term living system defines other realities as well. We see a living system as an orderly, complex and interrelated arrangement of living components that work together to accomplish a goal. So “living system” can be applied to not just the physical realm, but the social realm as well. An organization, church, city or country can all be considered living systems.
